"Working with Kurt has not only helped me improve my strength but also my overall physical health. I’ve been a competitive athlete my whole life, taking up beach volleyball in high school and loving it. At college, I started lifting more seriously to help me become a better athlete. Even though I had searched all of YouTube to make sure I was working with proper form, I still wasn’t getting the results I wanted, and I was experiencing a lot of pain in my groin and bicep. After working with Kurt for just two sessions, I was able to perform exercises with no pain and began to see sizable increases in the amount of weight I could lift.

I can now jump higher than ever before and see it translate to my continued winning streak in volleyball. My body feels healthy, athletic, and bulletproof. If you want someone who can make you a stronger athlete, then see Kurt! I know I’m giving him a lot of high praise, but that’s because he deserves it, and after researching training strategies online for so long, I’ve finally surpassed my goals. Thank you, Kurt!"

She-ra’s Story

Who woulda thunk that this former 65 pound weakling, who in seventh grade didn’t have the strength to serve a volleyball over the net, would take up powerlifting at age 54.  After 27 years of weight training, it was time to take my training to a higher level.  I began working with Kurt last fall with the goal of competing in powerlifting.  I have now competed twice and placed second both times in the Masters 50-59 level.  This is the first time in my life I have ever competed as an athlete.  It’s a heady feeling of success and accomplishment, working toward a specific goal and then attaining that goal.

Kurt competed in powerlifting for ten years and continues to educate himself about all aspects of strength training and conditioning.  I am the lucky beneficiary of all his varied experience.  He has carefully planned my program, both long-term and short-term, and analyzed my strengths and weaknesses to eliminate any imbalances.  Although my strength training is geared for a powerlifter, and I’ve learned how to properly execute the three competition lifts, he has not neglected other aspects of the well-rounded program.  He devised an individualized stretching routine and works with me on visualization and competition strategy.  Kurt pays attention to the most minute details, and nothing gets past him!

No, I’m not naturally strong, but I’ve transformed myself into someone who is strong and powerful, both physically and mentally.  And if I can do it, anybody can if you have the will, the desire and the perseverance--and you love what you’re doing!

I’m living my fantasies. Thank you, Kurt, for feeding my dreams and making them reality.

Bottom line is Kurt has helped me when no one else could.
He has been a godsend.
— Marco Diez

Kurt has helped me dig myself out of one of the darkest periods of my life; namely a 12 year stretch of chronic, debilitating lower back, hip, and knee pain due mainly to injuries accrued throughout the years. During this period, I traveled the country seeing the most renowned specialists (orthopedic surgeons, rehab specialists, trainers, sports doctors, etc.). Unfortunately along the way I also went through a few surgeries and procedures which actually made things worse. I essentially lost my 20's to a cycle of pain and depression which severely affected my personal and professional life.

The moment you meet Kurt, you understand he's working on another level, not just as a trainer, but as a person. I was immediately struck my his "no nonsense", positive energy. His assessment of my issues and the possible solutions made complete sense to me and he was confident he could help me. His uncanny ability to accurately evaluate what's happening with my body; great wealth of knowledge, and thorough and balanced training technique, have helped me greatly. He knows when to push, and more importantly when not to push; a very rare talent.

I've learned how my pain and disability are not "just" the result of a certain injury, of which there are many, but a combination of injuries plus bad movement patterns, coping mechanisms, and emotional trauma from as far back as my pre-teen years. This all affects how I pick up, say, a piece of paper from the floor and alternately, how I do a set of reps at the gym. This gets to the crux of how Kurt considers everything in the clients life to determine the best course of action for rehabilitation or to achieve whatever goal the client might have. For the first time in my life, I am beginning to wrap my head around the whole idea of a healthy balance between the body, mind, and life outside the gym. I am feeling better than I have in a very long time.

Bottom line is Kurt has helped me when no one else could. He has been a godsend. Thanks Kurt!

. . . I have not needed to have an office visit to a chiropractor for over a year and a half! My chiropractor, also a friend, has said “the best thing about Kurt for you is, he has kept you injury free.”
— Bill Weiss

Before I met Kurt, I was battling several issues. The most significant was pain, numbness and “tingling” in my arms, hands and fingers. The diagnosis was a narrowing of the spinal canal or Spinal stenosis. This discomfort would become unbearable while driving even short distances, sitting at my office desk, with or without working on the computer, and during the night trying to sleep. I would need to lie on the corner of my bed face down and let my arms dangle for relief. I also suffered from time to time with Lumbar spinal stenosis or Sciatica (narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back). For the relief from these problems, I, unfortunately, had to take prescription medications. I was not planning on any invasive surgical procedures.

At the time, I also suffered from stiffness, poor balance and was not very motivated by my workout regime. I always had a joint or a muscle that hurt, not sore but hurt. I visited my chiropractor weekly, followed by occasional visits to an orthopedic doctor.

I am extremely pleased to report I seldom have any of the issues described earlier, and I am pain medication free! The reason, Kurt Elder. Instead of single muscle power exercises, I would describe his methods as training for daily living activities. Strengthening my core, exercise movements that increase the range of motion, balance, muscle strength, and cardio are all part of the program that allows me to have pain and injury free life. Through Kurt’s method of new and different activities for each session, the workout never is boring or redundant. My muscles never become stale by the same old workout. It is very motivational!

This summer I was vacationing in the New Hampshire’s White Mountains on Lake Winnipesaukee. We were staying at my cousin’s home on the lake for my nephew's wedding. One afternoon, the “kids” in their early thirties, pulled out the “standup” paddle boards. All of them are fit and athletic. My son, also in his 30’s and very fit, said, “Come on dad, let’s go out!” This standup paddle boarding is far more problematic than it looks and for a 65-year-old, well, let’s just say a little daunting. It entails, pulling yourself up on the board, getting to your knees and “popping-up” to the standing position, without falling off during the action. Then you need to paddle, keep your balance, make turns, and so on. It is all core, balance, range of motion, all things Kurt stresses. I DID IT! I was the only person over 30 that would even try. My son, who has joined me in several workouts with Kurt, yells, “Hey dad, thank Kurt Elder!” I am looking forward to this winter to snow skiing at Mammoth Mountain.

In closing, I have not needed to have an office visit to a chiropractor for over a year and a half! My chiropractor, also a friend, has said “the best thing about Kurt for you is, he has kept you injury free.”

Thank you KURT!

Tony Cline, 37

I have had a long history of back problems and surgeries and I think Kurt is the reason my back has never felt better! Kurt’s knowledge of the body and body function puts his product light years ahead of other trainers and allows him to personally cater the most effective regimen. I have recommended Kurt to numerous friends and family members including my brother in law, who plays in the NBA. Kurt is simply the best.

As a former athlete at Stanford and various NFL teams, I feel that I’ve been exposed to the best coaching in the world including Dennis Green, Bill Walsh and Marv Levy. Never during my athletic career have I worked with a Fitness Coach/ Personal Trainer as talented, knowledgeable, professional, focused and intense as Kurt. In fact I have never paid for a physical trainer in my life because I always found them to be more cheerleader than coach. Kurt is never static or satisfied with any part of his profession. He is constantly seeking better results by taking classes, reading, as well as taking the initiative to explore new ideas and movements.

I appreciate your commitment to the individual not the program. I’m sure many practitioners in your field subscribe to various schools of thought. I know that over the years you have honed in on the most efficient and practical methods of training. Your interest in your clients and their physical well being is what makes you stand apart from others in the business.

If I were to refer someone to you I would tell them to be prepared to work. This method of training should not be taken lightly. I would also let them know, that results will be seen if they are as serious as you are.

Originally I just wanted to build up my strength after my injury, which is what led me to you. After a year I have not only seen dramatic results in my flexibility but have not injured myself any further. Your concern and ability to read the body and not overload or overwork it keeps me coming back as your client. Over the past year we have filled out various goal sheets. I have personally attained 80% or more of my projected goals. The largest gain in strength and flexibility has come in the form of my lower back advancement.

Thanks Kurt,
Gil G.

I really appreciate your vast array of knowledge and the ability to tie in the mental and spiritual aspects of health to my program. Also, I think few trainers focus on core strength and inner health, in general, the way you do.

You asked if I was to recommend your services, I really don’t have to say anything. They just look at me and are interested usually. But if they ask me what it is about you, I tell them how in tune you are and how you pay attention during workouts AND you listen. Also, the fact that you know so much about the back and rehabilitation is often something that interests most people.

I really appreciate your attention to detail and the time you put into noticing the different needs of your clients. Also, you make it a point to recognize my level of energy, and adjust my workouts accordingly. I like that you respond to my specific needs rather than just serving me up some canned routine that you dole out to everybody.

But most important is that I have lost 30lbs, gained an enormous amount of strength, have no problems motivating to work out everyday, started running again, doing yoga (flexibility has increased). . . thinking about martial arts next. I now know what I need to eat to maintain my energy. In general I am more tuned into my body and how everything that I do affects it. When I started to invest a lot of time and energy into my workouts I change the way I thought about my body and how I treated it. I became more aware.

"I broke my back, but I don't know when. "

That's how we started. I broke it about 36 years ago. I did it without knowing I had, bodysurfing I think. You see, I have a condition called Spondylo Lysthesis. It's a congenital pre-disposition to a back fracture (L-5) that will never heal. Part of the bargain is having short tight hamstrings too, further stressing the back. I never knew I had any problem until one day I could barely walk. It was after visiting a Chiropractor twenty years ago for a mid-back soreness. He "adjusted" me, and flared up my fracture. I went straight to a sports medicine clinic where they diagnosed me without even needing to get near me. Stance, gait, tightness... all obvious signs to them. So much for Chiropractors.  Daily back pain was my norm for many, MANY years. Now, all this leads me to to Kurt Elder. Every few months I would have another flare-up and suffer intense pain and immobility. Doctors said I needed to work out, do abdominal exercises, and stretch.  I did on my own, and it helped a little, but then I decided I needed to get serious. That was a year and a half ago. I started to work out with Kurt as my personal trainer. I was reluctant at first. The money, the time, getting up SO early... Would it be worth it? OH YES it was! Kurt did some special research into my condition and adjusted his training to take my shortcomings into consideration, tailoring a program that built my core strength, flexibility and posture to the point where I have not had my daily back pain for a long time now. I feel like I did BEFORE I knew I had a problem, only now I am more aware of my body, more in tune with my fitness and motivated permanently. Kurt has helped me build and tone effectively with NO issues as a result. I have never injured myself in his training, and recovered from my own stupidity faster than ever before. I feel stable, strong and quick. I am now more informed and able to "re-set" my body better than ever. Kurt's profound knowledge of the intricate human body enables him to really work through or around all of the issues I have: arthritis, spondylo, scar tissue from old injuries, and my own mistakes like too much couch-time! Thanks Kurt! It's a beautiful thing you do for us all.

“. . . Kurt is a relentless pursuit of helping me evolve physically as well as mentally”
— Bruce Waxman

I started working out with Kurt in March of 2005 after I tore my groin and hip flexor in half at the end of 2004 in a wakeboarding fall. I waited a few months and tried to rehab on my own but was not making any progress. I lacked any mobility in that area. I choose Kurt specifically because I had watched him train his clients over the years and appreciated the discipline, rigor, and technical attention to detail that seemed lacking in other trainers. When I asked him how he would approach my rehabilitation, I was impressed with his plan. What I have found over the 2.5 years I have trained with Kurt is a relentless pursuit of helping me evolve physically as well as mentally. In the past, I was able to “get away” with telling other trainers what I wanted to do on a specific day, or what I felt I needed to work on. Kurt would have none of that…he had a program or should I say programs! He was at first dogged on details and technique, so much so that on days that I train on my own, I hear his voice telling me about positioning or stance. I have been around 12% body fat (down from 16%) since training with Kurt, and have added muscle mass and cardio endurance. Having worked out in various gyms over the last 20 years, I find him to be the most dedicated and serious training consultant I have come across. There is a commitment to honing his craft and being the best he can be and helping you get there too. I’m grateful I’ve had the opportunity to train with Kurt. There are generally no easy training days and I wouldn’t have it any other way. And, due to the hard work and specific focus on my injured areas, I have not missed a ski or wakeboarding season yet! Thanks Kurt
